i have an 87 with the 4+3 o.d. trans...the car is mostly original, engine drive belt ,hoses,brakes....i will be updating them this year....my question is about the trans. the bolt or fill plug, has weld spots all over it the whole plug is covered. i couldn't find any other place on the car, they are tack welds like used to keep a panel in place before fully running a bead...i don't have a clue why.every thing else under the car looks fine..thanks.
Those filler plugs are commonly stuck if not ever removed. Many use methods such as welding a piece onto the plug to help remove it. It's probably never been removed. Once you do get it loose, it's good to loosen and tighten it every few years. That should eliminate it ever happening again.
The plug is a common piece and the threads are 1/2" "pipe thread".
Once the fill plug has been removed, remove the drain plug and let the oil drain out. Clean the threads of the plugs and the threads in the trans case. Use a light coat of antiseize compound on the plug threads. The FSM says to torque the fill plug to 25-35 ft-lbs and the drain plug to 15-25 ft-lbs.
Get some good quality 80W GL5 or 80W-90 GL5 gear oil to refill the trans.
