1996 LT4 Opti Replacement (Advice)
I have a 1996 LT4 CE with 38k. The car has very rarely ever been driven in the rain, I have driven it in the rain one time since I have owned only, only because I got trapped.
The car is running perfectly fine and I have no reason to replace the opti, other than I am having the front crank seal replaced.
From everything I have read, the 1996 has the vented opti, and most people seem to get higher mileage out of them (100k+). I have also read where people have not had the best of luck with reliability on the replacement opti. So my question is, do I replace when I would only really need to pay for the cost of the part and minimal labor, or do I leave it since it is working fine?
I will also be looking actively looking to sell the car starting in July.
Thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave
With that said: inspect the vacunm venting harness (hoses) for physical damage, or deterioration
clean the low voltage wiring harness and where it plugs into the body of the opti with contact ceaner
don't replace the Opti, but do pull the cover ("cap") and like any other distributor clean the posts and rotor of any corrosion, or replace if necessary.
pull the mounting screws on the rotor and reset them with a dab of locktite.
when replacing the cap put a small bead of silicon / rtv to seal it to the opti body to protect against moisture intrusion.
and put a small hose barb and hose in the weep hole of the waterpump to direct any future waterpump leak off, and away from the opti.
consider new spark plugs and wires, even if the originals are / were "working fine".
