hello,
I was driving my 1984 Corvette, manual transmission on Sunday. The car ran good. I got home and all of a sudden steam came out of the radiator. I changed the cap, thermostat and radiator. I started the car and nticed that the exhaust manifolds were RED GLOWING HOT and that the upper radiator hose seemed collapsed.
I can really use some help here. Thank you all.
How was your heat gauge reading ? When you say steam came from the radiator,do you mean the puke tank,or the radiator..If the rubber seal was rotten on your old cap maybe it clogged the little line to
the puke tank

If your radiator hose was collapsed it means your thermostat is stuck closed which is why your car over heated, always get a gm or delco thermostat, autozone or advance auto part thermostats EVEN WHEN NEW do indeed fail closed.
First of all than you for the quick and helpful responses. I just wanted to see if my thining was correct or did the Corvette have some mystery do dad that could cause this.
I will this evening remove the thermostat drop it in boiling water and see if it opens.
Simultaneously changing the upper radiator hose.
I figure that with out the thermostat I should get a good flow.
Hopefully the thermostat will fail and that will be all.
If those things do not work I am thinking cats, timing or water pump.
I think the cats are a long shot because the car is performing okay.
Timing maybe but if it were toooooo far advanced I would think it would have trouble starting.
If it is the water pump how do I tell. poor flow.
And if I change the pump I guess it is timing chain time.
Has anyone put in timing gears rather than a chain?
Once again thanks to everyone. Any comments are welcome and appreciated

I have never put timing gears in any of my own cars, but the ones I've heard in others cars were very loud with a whining noise.. This would drive me crazy but everyones got a different level they can tolerate....I have a double roller in my 383 and it's very quiet.....WW
As has been mentioned check the cap and purge line to the coolant tank as well. Before you start replacing more expensive parts. I've had thermostats that only opened halfway also this was enough to overheat the engine.
Thank you. I thought that the gears would be noisey. If I do change the timing gear it will probably be double roller. I am going take out the stat. Put it in some hot water. And run the car without the stat. At least then I will know that the whole block has water in it. I am also replacing the upper hose.
Hope those 624 heads on your 84 did not get hurt. They are very prone to cracking in the exhaust seat areas on the center exhaust valves when the engine is overheated. Your 84 only has one cat on it and if you live in a no smog area you might want to get a true dual exhaust system be rid of it.
