This has happened a couple times . I put the charger on it and it starts right up. Near perfect 86 coupe, 20 K miles, new battery. I will get under the car tomorrow. I know I should check all ground wires. I thought I would check the starter and solenoid first. Thankfully the darn thing is diagonal in my own garage so the only inconvenience at this point I can't bring my wifes car inside. Showing 11.6 V. It has started showing as little as 10.6 V.
These batteries go dead fast, so you listen to radio with hood open and door open then CLick....
If your getting good voltage at Starter and it will not start then you need to check amperage. Turn Head lights on and see if they dim way down when you turn the key. If so then more than likely bad starter.
I just recently went thru a similar ordeal and ended up finding a broken starter solenoid...start one day...not the next. Seemed like a VATS issue, but not. Might start if I let it sit for 5 minutes....might start if I jumped it.
Solenoid was cracked across the terminals so it was not making contact inside. A good whack on the starter usually made it work..that time.
Thanks guys, I knew soemthing would go wrong, I did get my FSM here a few months back.
Is it possible to remove the starter without loosening the exhaust and trans lines. 4+3 Manual
Many Thanks. I took a shot in the dark. I was worried after I got the starter out and did a bench test. A little rough sounding but kicked right over. The starter is not the problem,(I thought) but going to replace it anyway since its out. (its 27 years old.) For a former mechanic with a bad hip and a bad shoulder. I am pretty proud of myself.
I knew this anyway but always raise the car as high as you can. I am working with one floor jack.
I worry I am going give to my vette the "Tena Twist"
A problem I did not expect was a temp sender in the block, in the way to take out the starter' so before I was swimming in coolant I drained it.
Moral of my story is: I was freaking out when my fan came on- No prime in the water pump. I hope I did not hurt anything.
Air is out of system ,cooling normally----- starter spins engine twice as fast. NO VATS PROBLEM
