Default ZF6 Engagement Point?

OK so I've done some reading this afternoon and what I think I have is normal, but the paranoid side begs me to ask...

A friend of mine drove my corvette briefly last weekend (92 ZF6 with 58k miles on it) and he commented about how high the clutch engagement point is. I honestly hadn't thought about it since it's been like that from when I bought it last year. I'd say it starts to disengage about 1" from the top and is fully disengaged in another 3 inches or so, leaving the rest as just extra. (this is a guesstimate, I haven't measured fully clutch travel and I could have my terminology wrong.) Or if you want to think about it the other way, and the clutch is fully in, the clutch starts to engage at the top when coming up.

A few posts have suggested this is completely normal as I've read a handfull of posts where people claim lots of C4's are like this, but other posts have suggested the hydraulics need to be bled or the Slave Cylinder might need to be replaced. Some people have done this, only for it to return to that point.

The car drives fine, shifts fine, clutch is 2 years old, no slipping and the car only has 58k miles on it....

So. Is it normal for the clutch engagement to be so high?

Thanks in advance!

Don't worry - I'd say that from your description, it's normal to maybe a touch high, but as long as it isn't slipping - a high clutch is not an issue. You need to be worried when the clutch pedal moves significantly (read most of the way to the floor) before it disengages, that's where expensive trouble can occur.

I have always been worried about this as well. I bought my 94' with 92k miles on it, and it had a high engagement point from the get go. At 106k miles, I replaced the clutch because it started slipping. It still had a high engagement point even with a brand new clutch kit from Carolina clutch. I'd say its normal for most of the ZF C4's. If it engages closer the floor, more than likely the slave or master cylinder is worn.

As stated above, if it isn't slipping, keep on driving!

High clutch engagement is fine. My 85 also starts high and has some room to play with so it's comfortable.

The C5 also in the garage is a different story. I didn't know what high engagement was until I drove that sucker for the first time. You have about an inch of use and then the rest of the travel is for full depression and changing gears. Jerky if you're careless, but the most refined transmission I've ever driven.
