Are you running a stock TPI intake and exhaust manifolds? That is your bottle neck if you are. My 88 with headers, duals and free mods made 245/328 at the wheels. You sound at least 75 hp lower than I would expect.

Drive is the proper gear to be in because of the 1:1 ratio. Virtually 100% of dyno runs are brought up to ~ 2,500 rpm to ~ 3,000 rpm in drive (or fourth in a manual trans) and then a quick roll on of the throttle.
Its really too bad they didn't hook up some diagnostics. Outside of any mechanical ills you are likely to find malfuncioning sensor(s) or a totally whack computer program.
Best of luck,

The TPI intake is good for well over 300 HP.
p.s.
If he has the stock 85 heads on there, those are complete junk for the most part. Also the stock manifolds will absolutely kill a 383s power.

DOn't mean to be rude, but are you sure you have a 383? Did you built it yourself or did you buy the car and the previous owner told you it was a 383? Don't laugh, this actually happens all the time! Because your number would be almost dead on if you didn't have that 383.
Just curious.
