Default Corvette Horn Button Assembly

This is my first post here so please excuse me if I am doing something wrong.

I just bought my first Corvette (an '86 with a '94 body kit) and I am running into an issue. The horn assembly is total garbage. In other words, nothing is there....so it doesnt work!! All I have is the horn button itself with a wire hooked up to it. The button sits flush against the wheel... so it can't be pressed or anthing. So my question is this. What parts are needed inside of the steering wheel to get the horn to work?, does anybody have any pictures that will help me with assembly? Thanks so much for the help!

I recall a two-prong assembly that the horn made contact with when pressed.

You might contact Jason at Vette2Vette about what parts are needed inside the steering wheel; I'm sure he can provide quality used parts to fit your needs.

The '86 horn button is made of a flexible material, so it doesn't have a gap between the button and the face of the steering wheel. There is a metal disc inside the button that contacts to the retaining clips that hold the button into the wheel, which provides the ground connection for the circuit. The wire from the bottom of the button goes to a twist-in connector in the wheel, which contacts a slip ring under the steering wheel hub. A wire from the slip ring goes to the horn relay, which is near the bottom of your steering column, under the dash.
When you say that "all you have is the button with a wire", is the wire plugged into the socket in the wheel hub? It's a pretty simple switch inside the horn button. Probably has some corrosion in the contact area. With the button out of the car, test the switch with a volt/ohm meter as you push on the button. You can carefully pry the switch out of the plastic button, clean up the contact areas, then apply a very light coating of white grease to prevent corrosion. Clean up the two mounting tangs that snap into the wheel hub as well as the metal areas of the wheel hub where the horn button fits, and apply a little grease here, too. Try the continuity test again, snap the button in place (the horn will probably sound as you install the button), and you're done!
Your new Corvette is 27 years old! It's not "garbage". It just needs a little TLC! Welcome to the forum!
