Actually I wanted to go 245's and a solid roller, but he didn't want the maintenance of a solid roller. So we compromised on the 235's and a hyd roller cam.
Yeah, you can use the 245's with a hyd roller. I just felt with a hyd roller it wouldn't see the rpm and have the valve lift to utilize the 245's. In reality though, the 245's would still work ok. It's just with a solid roller you can get more valve lift and rpm.
Jim,
Your engine coming out looks brand new! It's clean. I love the look of the Crower shaft system. I'm jealous. I think you said Darren is getting a shaft system also. Cool stuff. I believe you said you will have Strausberg Machine go over it with a fine tooth comb before deciding on whether you will be keeping the 450 or making it a 454. Either way it will be nice for you to have the "miss" you have been fighting forever. Anyway it looks great. Keep us posted on what you find out.
I forgot to mention the reason I am going thru it is I had a issue with the damper and the front of the crank. I used a previous machine shop before Strasberg Machine back in 2007 when I built it, and had problems with their machine work. I had a piece of mallory metal fall out of the crank, and they honed the damper too loose. It was a mess, I tried to repair it and worked for a while. But the damper has come loose on the crank again. So the only way to really fix it replace the crank. I got a new Eagle 4340 crank and a new damper, so I will see how everything else looks. It will be nice to have everything 100% perfect.

I made some more progress. I got a new billet timing chain set, and degreed the cam again. This time it was 1 degree retarded, so I will leave it there. And I got the heads on it. He went with some pretty nice Crane lifters, and I installed them also. We still need the shaft system, and oil pan, timing cover, and some other odds and ends. But it's getting there.
I also got my 450 tore down and got it to the machine shop.

Sure is alot of hp floating around im Jims shop. In regards to the heads we poured over the combo many times, and with the cam and decided rpm level the 235s were the best compromise over the 220s especially in some low lift exhaust points, 245 more of a max effort solid roller. I just said you cant put to big a head on these big cube motors because you hear alot guys say a big head will kill bottom end. With 400lb+ in the lower rpms I dont think it will be an issue.
If Jim has to get new pistons and make it a 454 that will be the ultimate big cube build if ive ever seen one. At my local track da (sea level)hes got a c4 teetering 8 sec barrier. Thats insane. Take care all.
For anyone wanting to read more info on the dart shp block here is a link that explains most the features on the shp line. Its a real nice block for the price. http://www.chevyhardcore.com/tech-st...ock-chevrolet/
