Looking for the best cam to put into a '95 LT1 / 4L60E (3.36 gears) to give me the most off-idle "umph!" This is a daily driver (C3 - 1976) clocking in at about 3,500 lbs. Stock convertor. Engine has 43K miles.
Comp recommends their 07-502-8: 495/503 (Dur 218/224 @ .05) LSA of 112, but I plugged in their 07-501-8: 488/495 (Dur 212/218 @ .05) LSA also 112, into DD2000 and averaged 15lb/ft more thru 3500 RPM.
ZZ3 and LPE-211 both have pretty high lifts w/ short durations, but I heard they are sluggish under 3,000. Thoughts on these????
LT1 stock has VERY short durations (203/208 @ .05) and high LSA 116, with mild lifts 450/460, but looks good on DD2000...
I would hate to install this engine thinking I *should have* done a cam swap, but if the LT1 stock cam has best low-end grunt, I'll deal w/ that just fine!
Re: Search for TORQUE...low duration, high LSA, Both? (DR'76)
I have used the 210/224 crane cam. Virtually all aftermarket cams with increased duration over stock will lose that off idle oomf. I don't think I have ever replaced a stock cam and not lost some off idle torque but the increase in mid range was worth it in most cases. Just leave the stock cam in the motor. A torque converter would be a nice upgrade for your setup.

Yeah, I was kinda figuring that aftermarket would cater more to the 1/4 mile crowd than the daily drivers, since not many daily driver's get mods.
As far as converter choice, who and what stall would you recommend? 2,000? Higher? (BTW, what is approximate stock stall speed?...mine may be higher since a bit heavier)
Re: Search for TORQUE...low duration, high LSA, Both? (DR'76)
The hot cam doesn't give up that much low end but it really lights up the upper end. Anything thats gonna give you a huge low end grunt is going to kill your upper end.
Just my opinion, no flames intended at all, the LT1 likes to breath and run hard. Put a cam in it that'll give you a little more upper end and make your torque back up with a set of gears. Might not be feasable, but it's what the motor is best suited for.

Huh, That first Comp Cam has the same specs as my retro-roller. It's got a choppy idle and my vac is only about 12 or so but i'm stroking so there's influence from that.
