I finally got around to installing my camber brace today. I have to say i am very pleased with the results. My car has 70K on it and it feels like it used to when i first bought it. No more suspension slop and the pot holes are barely noticable now. The whole car turns and tracks better. I really wish i would of done this a while ago.
The install went fairly smooth except for the last part, trying to get the bolt past the steering pump pulley on the driver side. I opted to try the "belt on" route as i didn't feel like trying to put the belt back on with the bar there. After about 45 mins of jerking and pushing on the bolt, i was getting ready to cut three threads off. On the last try it started to go, and i pushed it through. Whew, good thing i didn't cut the bolt.
I didn't have to shim the bar either, fit perfectly. I used cardboard and painters tape to cover the bar during the install, and it came out mostly scratch free.
I highly recommend this mod for anyone who wants to tighten up their front end for $150 or so. Now for some Revalved Bilsteins and Sway bars!!
Re: Camber Brace installed - Its stiff again! (92TripleBlack)
I left the belt on and was having a hard time with that driver's side bolt too :mad here's a tip that worked for me. My first attempt was to try and get the bolt in from the front and work it past the belt (the bolt head was pointing towards the radiator)...no way. Eventually, I pointed the bold down, so the head was under the belt. Get it lined up with the hole and move the head towards the engine. Going in at that angle and pushing the belt a little made it go in fairly easily. :yesnod:
Re: Camber Brace installed - Its stiff again! (94Controller)
94 Controller,
I ended up doing pretty much that same technique. Pushing the bolt through the front lined up the bar and frame, and i could just wiggle it in after that.
Did you instally your crossbar after the camber brace. I was thinking about adding one, but i don't know if i am comfortable with the bar there. Did the two of them tighten the frame up a lot more? It seems to me that the camber brace is in an area where there is little support. The cross bar links the car together where the roof seems to already.
Re: Camber Brace installed - Its stiff again! (DSTJ99)
DSTJ99, I put the Cross Bar in first, about 4 months ago. On a scale of 1 to 10, for stiffening the car up, I would give it an 8. I drove with the roof out after installing the Cross Bar, and it was much better, but I could still feel the front end trying to wobble (weird feeling, whatever it was)...so, I got the Camber Brace, and although IMO it didn't do as much as the Cross Bar, it definitely took the front wobble away. Car feels very stiff now. Maybe it was because I put the Cross Bar in first that I feel this way. I think if I put them both in at the same time, I would've needed to change my pants! :jester
I'm wondering if what I felt with just the Cross Bar was what I've seen called "bump steer?" Sure felt like the front was bouncing over rough road.
