finally broke it
Well guys I made my first trip to the track in the old 87 vette. Boy was I surprised. first trip ran 8.60. Buttttttt I IIIIIIIII started to hear this low clucking noise. Played it off as if nothing was wrong. second trip ran 8.57. Boy did it get worse. Went home and got almost there and push my luck one more time, thats when it happen!!!!!!. loud popping noise. pulled it down and broke pinion gear and ring gear. Can I replace it with dana44 and if so what kind of changes will I have to make. sorry so long.Oh that is a 1/8 mile track.

I take it you have an auto.
My understanding is you will need to get a manual's drive shaft as the lengths are different. You will also have to swap the engine side yoke from your old auto drive shaft. The splines are different.
