It looks like my 3rd Optispark in the past 5 years has bitten the dust.
My 1994 coupe has always started with the turn of the key. Never any cranking. Yesterday after sitting for 3 weeks without being driven it cranked for 30 seconds before it started. The check engine light soon came on.
I took it out for the morning came back home parked it and left it for an hour and a half. When I tried starting it again it just cranked and would not catch.
I left it and tried again 3 hours later. It cranked for 30 seconds when it didn't start I waited then tried again. It started.
I drove it around the block and it ran smoothly.
I parked it turned it off then tried to start it again. I had to try 4 or 5 times to get it to start.
If it turns out to be the Opti spark any suggestions where and what to buy?
This one is an AC Delco the previous one was an MSD.
I have used the Delteq ignition system with great success. It uses a Northstar coil assembly and a control box designed specifically for this system. All the wiring harnesses and plugwires are designed for the specific applications. The Opti-spark body will remain in place as a signal source for the new system but the cap and rotor are removed and Delteq sells an aluminum cover to replace them. This system is good to over 7,000 rpm and if you decide to return the car to stock configuration everything simply unplugs since there is no cutting or splicing needed for the install. The coilpack is mounted on the driverside valve cover so it's easy to get at.Installation takes about 2-3 hours and is within the ability of most home mechanics.Go to delteq.com and you can read the instruction manual on their website (make sure your pdf reader is up to date). It's not a cheap solution at around $700 dollars but it works.I have had mine for about two years in my 1993 Corvette and no problems so far.
