Default stereo wiring conundrum...

Hi everyone. I have an 85 that I have had for a while now and yesterday I pulled the radio that the previous owner had installed to install a new flip out dvd unit. I find that the wiring in the dash is horrid. What would the best approach be to fixing the wiring?

For me, I prefer to install new wiring when a harness adapter won't work. If the wiring is questionable in your car - replace it or install new wire and leave the old there if you have doubts, after all the wiring is nearly 30 years old and probably prone to noise in the stereo.

I have tried searching for replacement harnesses. but, it seems that most of the ones that are out there are just used harnesses. are there any reputable companies that carry new ones? or do you think that I would be better off making my own?

It won't take very long to make your own and you'll know everything about it. It will probably be much cheaper too. I'm going to be replacing all of my stereo stuff in my vette next week and I'll make my own harness. I'll be using better speaker wires, shielded cabling to the amp, and I'll do my best to make sure the power is clean and quiet.

I got to thinking the same thing earlier this afternoon. How are you thinking about providing the switched power source? I was thinking a regular switch since I don't want to further splice into an already hacked up harness.

I'm going to wire a relay with the source straight from the battery and the switch side of the relay from the (hopefully) hot lead to the original stereo harness. If I can't use the lead from the original harness, I'll go to the fuse box and find a switched source.
