While driving home from a show yesterday, my cross fire developed a rattling and squeaking noise. It isn't really rpm related, does it at idle and even when cruising, doesn't really change in intensity. Sounds like a few marbles bouncing around in a pot metal casing, mixed with some mid level squeaking. It was fairly loud at one point, and when I got the car home it was hardly doing it at all. Let it cool, restarted it, and the noise is still there, but somewhat intermittently. I am perplexed on this one. I am pretty sure it is coming from the power steering pump, but not sure. Sounds like possibly a bearing. I have had alternator bearings go, it doesn't really have the same sound. Any good hints for trying to troubleshoot without ripping half of my engine apart? Thanks in advance!
You ever post a question, and as soon as someone answers, you want to knock yourself in the head for not realizing something that was so obvious? Thanks guys. I pulled the belt and checked all of the accessories, and it definitely appeared to be the smog pump. Put the belt back on, started it up, and then I cut a 2 1/2 foot length of old garden hose and used it as a stethoscope, and sure enough, that was most definitely the problem. Pulled it off in about 10 minutes, going to get a rebuilt one tomorrow.
This HAS to be the easiest mechanical repair possible on a C4. Usually EVERYTHING is a PITA to fix or replace.
If you are not subject to smog testing you can eliminate the smog pump by using an 85 or 85.5" belt. Cleans up the engine really nice!
I have read that in a few other posts... but will that affect how it runs at all? Will it mess with the computer or cats, or cause check engine light issues? It just seems too easy... Nothing on a vette is ever easy!
Never set off a light on my carbed 84 and did not affect performance one way or the other. I removed all of the smog tubes and had the holes on the exhaust headers brazed shot. Much easier to get at the plugs. If you decide to eliminate the AC compressor a Dorman 34157 delete pulley and bracket kit will bolt right up. It is for an 88-92 F body but works on the 84 C4 too.
