For thoseof you who may still think about getting the MSD pile of crap. Mind you this was the SECOND unit after replacing the first one that was arching all over the place! This second one only had 380 miles on it.
I went thru 3 Petris opti's on 2 different cars I did engines on. The first one died with 500 miles. The second and third were on a 6500rpm 409 I built. With the Petris opti it would run to 5500 and start missing like a rev limiter. I tried another Petris opti same thing. Then I put a Delphi on it and ran perfect it pulled to 6500 again.
Petris, Chandler, MSD, AC/Delco etc... All, seem to be hit or miss?...
.
The only opti would ever consider running again on my LT is none! They are all JUNK!!! Ditched mine went to LS coils. I should have done this right from day one. I can't tell you how many times that motor came apart but probably eight if I'm not mistaken. Biggest POS GM ever designed...

put a petris on summer before last and have put 2500 miles on it so far without any problems.I also bought the extended warranty just in case.
Mr Petris is a nice fellow to talk with and very informative.
I am a professional mechanic and can tell you first hand to not let the word "brand new" fool you.I've had many a new part fail quickly, even from OEM
I am using the Delteq opti spark replacement which is based on the Northstar ignition components and I have had no problems since it was installed. It can be installed in about 3 hours with basic tools and all the parts are available through most any parts store in the event of damage or failure.
I had one on my '93 when I bought it, took it off and went back to original coil. At the time I bought a dynaspark unit but did not install it for several years when the opti finally went bad.
I put a vented Petris on my 92 last year. My car is stock so no high rpms. I have not had any problems. Also they sent everything needed to run the lines for the vent. It wasn't a bad install.
I hear ya, but just like I thought I would not have a problem with my brand new AC Delco water pump on my motor build. 3 tear-downs later and still scratching our heads as to why the motor was blowing one of the front seals but ONLY after you romped on it the first time. We would put it back together and it could idle or drive normal for eternity, but the minute you brought the R's up to any significant number drip...drip...drip...and then it would leak like a sive no matter what.
Brand new water pump had runout on the shaft. Just like all the other junk out there that is made in China it is getting harder and harder to find QUALITY made parts for ANYTHING! Don't even get me started on my POS fridge that has logic boards built by 12 year olds...that same board has failed me 3 times in 7 years, losing ALL the food in it every time because of course it's always when were not home...
Bill Mock has been rebuilding water pumps for many years. His rebuild may be better choice than the new/rebuilt off the shelf bought water pumps. mockauto@aol.com

Amen to this:
If scootin_z thinks that shiny new ac delco parts or remanufactured ac delco parts are the same as new old stock, then that is his problem with optisparks and waterpumps.
You need to troll ebay and know the right people! (ie. Some old man somewhere who has a new old stock acdelco optispark or waterpump sitting in his garage as a spare for the car he already sold)

I have one on my 93 and one on the shelf with two of the brains for it. SInce they went out of business years ago, I just bought extras..

Dizwiz, I know the ac delco parts are for the most part crap nowadays. Not just for these cars but most ac delco is now sadly total crap. I get it. As far as my "problem with the optispark" as you put it, it's flat out a complete $hit design by GM. Period. I will just agree to disagree with you on that one. Pulling this thing down is no fun with the blower. My original opti had 29K on it. This is a VERY clean car. When I split it open after it originally failed, It looked like it sat on the bottom of the ocean. And this is a vented opti (95 car) Why was it crap? Because of the gases inside the opti. I will also disagree with you on what is prone to failure in the opti. It is NOT the optical sensor on it's own. It is the self destruction from the gasses AND contamination from oil and coolant. Not to mention these cars run too hot. (another stupid idea to put that POS where it is) This car with the blower now runs 173 no matter what the temp outside is as long as I am doing 30 or above. Heat, coolant, oil and the corrosion from the ignition inside the opti are what kills them PERIOD. I would like to open your opti in 100k and mine in 100k and see what they both look like. And that's if yours makes it there (no matter whos opti your running) Just because you lurk ebay waiting for an NOS to pop up don't mean squat. your just buying a 20 year old POS as far as I'm concerned. Mine failed at 30K and it was very clean on the outside. I was BLOWN AWAY when I cracked it open. If I still have it in a box somewhere, I will post a picture. You will not believe how this thing looked.
I run the Hot Rod Power Tour in this car and so in one week it will see 2000 to 3000 miles, the drag-strip twice that week, torrential downpours and 95 degree temps with 100% humidity in the south. I think every dime I spent on this coil conversion is worth it. This car has never run better. I will assure you nothing will ever change my mind that the stock configuration (vented or not) opti spark is the bigges POS GM ever designed! I am fine with using it for a trigger because the sensor is fine. It's the ignition side of things that kill them.
Also, I would like to hear MILEAGE guys are getting out of all these different optis. Not YEARS. I'm going to venture to guess majority of these are not making it 30 to 50K IF that...
