Default Steering column replacement

Can I use a steering column from a stick car in an automatic car?
I have a chance to install a 94 m6 column in my 96 a4 car.

To maintain total functionality it's a fairly complicated install. Why do you need a column?

Thank you for replying,
The left side of the column was damaged when someone tried to steal it.
Dimmer switch parts broken, the plastic behind the blinker stalk was destroyed along with the plastic that covers the column.
Pretty much a big mess.
Found this column, hoping it would work without too much hassle.
If it is, I think I can just break it down and use it for parts.
Got it for $150.
Because its in such good shape I was hoping to not do this.
You think it's possible?
And what are the differances in the two columns?

The shift interlock hardware is buried quite deep in the column. If your damage is all isolated to the upper column I believe it much easier to transfer only the damaged parts column to column. Part of the interlock is in this image for the A4 #'s 73, 74 & 75. There's more involved but which would include the transfer of the key cylinder, or getting a key with the correct resistance cut for the M6 column if you have a key for it. Much to think about.

There are many tutorials with images that deal with what's required for replacement of most of the damage you describe.

In this link you can see how deeply the A4 lock hardware is located. 14th image. The images in this link are in no particular sequence to cover your needs but if you start at the bottom you should be able to visualize your needs. Good Luck!

Thanks for the information,
I'm going take your advice and just use this m6 column for parts.

I second that idea. I helped a buddy replace a steering column. Lots of work! Most of it upside down on the drivers floor. Definitely a two man job.

Tip- pay close attention to the dimmer switch and its adjustment. The switch itself is adjustable - two screws allow it to slide up or down the column by a little bit. Make sure the dimmer clicks when you pull back on the dimmer switch (stalk). I had no hi beams for a year, until I spent an hour under the dash yesterday to move that switch an eighth of an inch.
Take photos of your new column before you go too far so you can have A guide for reassembly. Digital cameras are your friends!

Good luck!

scon958, what are you going to do with the 6-spd column once you are finished with it. I have an auto column that the po put a 6-speed into and am looking for a 6=spd column.

I got a friend who's interested in it.
If he changes his mind I'll get back to you
What parts do you need?
