Okay I am in the midst of the ever dreaded shifter cable replacement, I have removed the center console top, the top part of the dash, head unit, climate controls, dummy light cluster, vents, dash end caps, and almost every bolt that holds the plastic frame for the dash in. I cannot get to the grommet with the 3 bolts that bolts to the transmission tunnel. It is blocked by part of the dash frame that holds the head unit in place. Do I REALLY have to take the entire dash out??? Any nudge in the right direction would be appreciated, being super frustrated and working in a windy dirt driveway is needless to say frustrating. I'm hoping for a "DUH" moment... 1992 Base, leather sports seats, Bose Gold, automatic, mostly stock except cat delete, 12 disc changer, K&N drop in, and a Hypertech Thermomaster chip.
This picture is on my 93 coupe before I converted to a manual. So, if the same as mine you shouldn't have to disassemble the entire dash except for the the center vent, the plate surrounding the radio, the console lid, shifter plate, seats, console side panels and then console. This gives you total access to the shifter. Disconnect the cable at the trans and shifter and you should be able to pull it through from the bottom or top. You can always cut it like I did since your replacing it. Removing the console is not as hard as it appears. Write down what you do and label all your screws if needed. A FSM would help greatly if you don't have one. Particularly because it identifies where each and every bolt or screw is. Also, a fish tape and gorilla tape will help you greatly in reinstalling the cable. Hope this helps.
Here's another pic with the console off. Sorry if it's sideways. Also, you may have to cut the insulation on the tunnel to get access to where the cable comes through. I just used some gorilla tape to seal it back up.
You are AWESOME!! Well I took a bunch of stuff apart that I didn't need to, guess it's a good excuse to clean it up all nice.. Thank you again for your help, you have made my week!! I will keep you posted on how it goes..

Shifter cable has a steel framed grommet retained by 3 bolts installed to the tunnel immediately behind the steel bracket shown in the pic in post # 2 above
