Default Air Pump removal?

The 85 Coupe I purchased earlier this year is eminating some noise from what sounds to be the air pump, as though the bearing is about to go. I have seen the replacement arm and pulley to eliminate the air pump, but is there any other changes that are required to the emission system once the pump is removed. What if any advantage is there to keep an air pump on the system other than originality. In Florida there are no Emission checks presently, so I am considering the elimination.

Do you still have a catalytic converter on your exhaust? If so, you need the air pump to push the air through it by way of the small metal tube that goes into to converter. The air pump weighs almost nothing if you're considering just taking it off for race applications. It won't really affect performance that much and it rarely ever goes bad. Many get removed as the owners just feel it looks cleaner without the pump assembly. Are you sure the noise is coming from the pump?

Everything is still in original configuration. It has given some starnge squeals after sitting a while, tonight it just sounded loose and worn. Short of putting a sounding rod to listen to it internally. I am just going by the obnoxios sound from that area. That will be my next step. It's probably the original and after 80K miles, is more than likely shot on the inside as far as the bearings go. I'd rather keep it on and after seeing the relatively light cost of doing so, probably will.

It’s a 1981, we had to close off the air tube to the catalytic converter because the new magnaflow cat doesn’t have a port for one. So if the air tube is welded shut does that mean the air pump is pretty much useless at this point?
