A couple of days ago I posted a thread called possesed starter http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=328027 so I took out the starter and and had it tested and every thing tested out fine so the guy at the starter shop took of a couple of caps and told me every thing was fine and in good condition. I put back in the starter and and the car started the car, she fires right up. I let the car warm up for about five min, shut it off and tried to restart and nothing. I need help bad with the weather this nice I am going to go postal if I have to drive this damn blazer all summer. The car only has 18,000 miles on and is in very good condition help!!!!!!!!
theres a tech tip around here about the starter being hot and not starting well, let me see if i can find it for you.
*edit
okay thats not what i thought it was, but the general idea is this:
If your starter will start fine when cold but when hot will not you may be experiencing starter overheating, in which case the starter will not start again until the soleniods cool down. From what i hear this is a pretty common problem, especially if you have headers. it is a good place to start i think, as it wont cost much just to take out your starter and put some heat wrap on it.
You will need to do some investigating,..... Do you have a meter? (When the key is inthe start position, do you have 12V at the starter solenoid small wire/screw?) Does the car have VATS?
when it won't start if you hit it with a hammer or some object and the car starts then it is for sure the starter is going or gone bad my did that just the other day. went to work it started went to leave and it wouldn't start. beat on with a hammer and it started rest of the day it started fine next day would start put new starter on no problem yet.. i would change it before you be left somewhere..
That's what happened to my 85 and my GF's dads 94. Left for a trip and stopped to get gas 100 miles from home. His car wouldn't start. I hit the starter with a wrench lightly and it started up the rest of the trip. I think that the heat makes them stick.
Run it again for 5 minutes and if it won't start, cool the starter with your garden hose and see if it will start. This will prove that the starter temperature is the culprit.
Thanks guys for the help after taking out the starter and having it tested, the starter was fine, the guy at the starter shop took off a couple caps and determined that everything was in very good condition. Reinstalled and got in the car and she fires right up but I noticed something my hand was on the shifter, so I shut the car off and tried to restart and nothing. So while trying to start the car I messed around with the shifter and the starter gave a little jump, just not enough. Took off the center console cover around the shifter and found the neutral saftey switch and removed it. after the switch was out it felt lose or broken, so I called Chevy and orderd a replacement for twentynine dollars it will get here tomorow. So I go back out to the car and reconnect the switch and pushed hard on the shaft comming out of the switch and the car starts and I go for a nice engine warming drive get home pull her into the garage and shut it off and restarted while pushing on the shaft, she starts fine I hope I have the problem isolated.
