Default A/C compressor engages on all settings

No matter what the controls are set for, except for off, the compressor engages. Heat, defroster, everything. If the switch isn't off, the AC is on, even when tying to use the heat. Is this in the controls? Or is there a relay? I can't imagine it's supposed to be like this.

84, not sure what system it has but it doesn't have anything electronic display for the a/c, it has the normal manual fan dial, cold/hot slider and slider for a/c, max ac, heat defroster and all that.

ok, manual system.

The compressor should not come on for heat, (some cars do to eliminate moisture) or econ (vent air). If it is running all the time, did this just start happening or has it always been like this since you got the car?

Might be jumper wired (hot wired) for some reason...sometimes people will run a hot wire if they cannot figure out which relay to change ...

Might be a bad selector switch...hard to say without the drawings.

This exact scenario is why I preach to everyone to BUY the BOOK ! If you had the drawings for this system you could easily see where the a/c compressor gets power and where it could possibly get power from circuits that should be open. Cake.

The FSM is the Bible for your Corvette. It has every detail and every test procedure for ANY and ALL possible problems. ...AND it has a separate book of nothing but electrical drawings that are in color and so simple that a child could trace a system fault.

Buy the books and you can fix anything on the car. Until they arrive, somebody here with an 84 manual a/c control will have the correct drawings and jump in with some guidance.

Good luck !

Buy the books !

Yeah it was doing it when I got it. I live in Florida, so heat isn't important, but sometimes I'd just like to use the defroster without it coming on, it's an old compressor so when it does come on it really puts a strain on the motor, you can feel a definite loss of power.
I'll get on ordering those books

On most cars, the compressor kicks in whent the defroster is turned on. I've heard two reasons: (1) to dry the air and/or (2) to excercise the compressor. The heat is another story. If you haven't ordered a fsm yet, you might get someone here with an '84 to put up a schematic.

That would be great, it's engaging every setting but off.
