Default A/C liquid line filter???

I see in my FSM book 1 for 1993 page 1B-25 and figure 20 and 21, it lists a line filter, which is not a standard item for the car the way it talks about it and I don't see it on mine. So where can I get one to install as I have the A?C apart at this time, aftermarket units, oems and part numbers. Can the screens/filter be serviced without removing refrigerant?

there are a number of aftermarket liguid line filters (from condenser to orfice valve /evaporator)...none of them looked like the one in my 1996 FSM...but any competent a/c shop should be able to install one; and yes the refrigerant will have to be recovered before the system is opened.

Mine is already empty as I am swapping engines. The used engine I bought has all the accessories on it. I also have a new drier and condenser and will flush the evaporator. Do they make a filter that can be removed without removing the Freon each time?

Filters work by trapping debris in the liquid line - there isn't any way to service one so it's a throw away part and that means evacuating and recharging. Face it, if it's dirty enough to clog one up, the system wasn't clean to begin with and if it's shedding metal from the compressor, it'll be shot along with the filter. With a new Condenser and Accumulator along with a line and Evaporator flush, the only concern is the Compressor. Assuming it's a Nippo, they have an appetite for shaft seals which you will see when they spew compressor oil all over the underside of the hood, so you might consider at least replacing that seal. On the other hand, if it's a Harrison R4, $250 Bucks for a new one is probably a worthwhile investment.

Hi, the only reason debris should get into the A/C system is from a broke compressor from the metal shavings. Usually, the majority of the debris will end up at the Expansion valve, or orifice tubes, whichever one you have. It should never get into the lines at any other time. In the event that it does come from elsewhere, you will lose your A/C. When replacing a compressor, a good way to clean out the lines is just to run air through the lines with an air nozzle, it's the best you're gonna get. There is no need to go out and buy a filter.
