Re: rattle in oil pan (corvette90)
I bet ya it is your front Y-pipe. I had a hell of a time diagnosing a similar sound with my 85 coupe and a wise old muffler technician told me a story about GM Y-pipes which are double-walled. Eventually the inner wall lets go from the outer and you get a noise that sounds in my case like a loose torque converter. Once he blew a few holes in the outer Y-pipe with a torch and rewelded the inner wall to the outer there was no more noise. Hope this helps. Good luck.

try to pin point the noise with a screw driver held to the car and to you ear.
You can pull the pan with the engine in the car.
The exhuast bolts are easy enough to tighten up.

You replaced rod bearings 3000 miles ago? If you spun a bearing before it may have:
a) caused the rod or rod journal to be slightly out of round, which would cause premature wear of the new bearing.
b) sent little specks of bearing material through the oil passages which in turn can damage other bearings.
Did you properly check the clearences when you installed the new bearing?
I'd examine my oil and see if there is any sign of metal specks in it.
I hope it's your exhaust, as funny noises from inside the engine are always bad news.
good luck

Re: rattle in oil pan (Jay Axson)
hi..
i didn´t spun a bearing, i pulled the oil pan an time ago, because i had some clicking noises, turned out to be the precats..
i chnaged the bearings, becuase, i´ve already bought them, but the old ones was still in good condition..
ah yes, no metal particles in the oil..
maybe this clicking is related to the hydra lifters, it only appears, when the engine gets hot..

Re: rattle in oil pan (corvette90)
a hard thump is typical of a bearing, that and a lot of engine shake.
have you listened with a screwdriver to it?
a little hard w/o being there. :(
