Default MAF sensor fault

Ive just started to get the SES light come on, and its showing code 48 "MAF sensor fault" im guessing the two are linked, but how do I remedy this? I reckon the fan is running constantly, its not getting up to full temp, but the engine is running strong, no problems with performance, as Ive said its only just started to do this, the car was in for O2 sesor replacement but they couldnt do it because they couldnt work out the wiring !!! wether they disconnected one of the original sensors and didnt reconnect, thats the only thing I can think of, I dont know if an o2 sensor disconnect would cause the code ??

My '96 (OBDII) threw a maf code on me last week, on the highway out of no where. But the next time I started it, the light was off, and hasn't come back since, so no telling.

If your getting repeated code, then start simple. Check your connection to the maf, and hit it with some maf cleaner.

sounds like the garage may have messed something up, when dealing with your o2 sensor replacement, the fan running constantly may indicate the car is in limp home mode, if the sensor is disconnected this would be the case, if I remember correctly the 94 has at least 2 o2 sensors, check the have reconnected properly and the wiring hasn't touched the exhaust, melted and shorted out.

replacing the o2 sensors is an easy job, if they use the correct parts and not universal sensors

The sensor is the same as 3.2l Isuzu trooper or 3.2 Vauxhall frontera

Well, Ive just spoke to the garage and they denied even touching the old sensors saying that the wiring looked "too complicated" !!!

It seems strange to me that it was fine when it went into the workshop and when it came out Im getting the SES light, Im getting code 48 and the fan is on constantly..

if the car is running in limp mode, it will run rich to protect the engine, this could damage the cats, if you have a scan tool, run the car and see if the car goes into closed loop, if it does it would be relatively safe to drive, try and clear the code 48 and see if it reoccurs, you could check the maf connector, and have a look at the o2 sensors your self, they are visable from the engine compartment on the exhaust downpipes, I change the sensor on my 89, took, 20 minutes.

you could also try www.alldatadiy.com, all though it is a paid subscription, it does give you access to the factory service info, and diagnostic flow charts.

I have used it for years and found it invaluable.

Well, just put the reader across it and its in closed loop, and the only fault its now showing is "MAF circuit fault" Ive got 2 new sensors for it, universal, from Claremont Corvette, so they should be good, as I understand it there's three on the '94, 2 upstream and one downstream, any idea which would be best to change, I dont really want to have to buy another (£90) unless I really need to

upstream only, the downstream one is only to do the emissions check on the cat, hopefully that will resolve the issue.
