hello everyone...been working hard on my 85 tuned, down to factory specs....runs cool. installed a dual fan switch for both fans, works great.....so I take the wife and four yorkies out for a ride to Mcd....at night, lights on, a/c on, got in line, showed the wife how the fan switch works, turned both on....car stays at 175 , nice smooth idle...but the the coolant temp guage changes to volts with a red light volts at 11.7 goose the idle 100 rpms...goes right away...I'm thinking it's no big deal.....idle in drive is usually 580 590 rpm...just seems like the car should be able to handle the full load....do I need to look further into this or am I getting too ****???...little help please...I want everything to work correctly....doesn't do it with the a/c off

I think you live with it or speed up the engine. The early alternators are a known weak spot. Those extra fans are part of your cause. I have some high watt headlights and they cause me the same thing.

thanks, thats reassuring....eventually, when I finish cleaning, degreasing, restoring everything,.....haven't gotten to the brakes, lines/etc....i'm going to chrome the engine...I'll get a higher amp alternator then.....Just wanted to make sure it wasn't some ground issue or something stupid....
