Looking for sympathy
If there's adjustments to be made, I'll make them. If there's a shift kit in there, it can be removed. When it's as smooth as my truck, I'll be a happy man.

history.
You'll get your trans figured out, I hope it's quick and simple.
Cheers, Gary

He also noticed a noise (clicking? clunking?) coming from the belt tensioner. I couldn't hear it, but he assured me it was there and should be repaired or replaced. Another thing to look up in my manual to see whether it needs parts or to be replaced.
Regarding the transmission, I got no sympathy from my son. BTW, he is a commercial parts mgr. for Autozone and used to be a certified Mazda and Ford mechanic, before the Carpal-Tunnel syndrome put him out of the wrench turning business.
He first checked the fluid. While it was full, it did smell burnt. He recommended taking it in for a transmission servicing. I guess that's likely different than taking your sow to another farm for servicing . . .
When we went for a ride, he put the tranny through its paces and said it seemed to be working fine. He couldn't tell if it had a shift kit, but he said in his opinion it was shifting properly and positively both up and down. He also said he heard a belt squeal during one of the shifts. Probably due to a weak spring in the belt tensioner.
His opinion? "Put your Big Boy pants on and drive it like you stole it. If you can't do that, sell it and just ride in the back seat of Mom's Chrysler. There's a good cup holder there for your can of Ensure"
