Has anyone tried-out this new single row radiator from DeWitts? Wondering if worth the price over a stock replacement? This would be for my stock '96 LT4.
My OE replacement radiator lasted 2.25 years and less than 5000 miles; cost was only $165 though whereas the single row DeWitts would be almost $400 with shipping.
But changing radiators is not what I call alot of fun....not all the difficult either.
I was just at the factory yesterday to pick up my single row from Dewitts. I talked to John there as Tom was in a meeting. very impressed with what I saw. He told me about the quality of there radiators. They had purchased other brands and had dissected them. Some used thinner materials, but one of the main things were welds and the fact that that Dewitts radiators heat treated process ensures that All the fins are fastened to the tubes. He mentioned that others were not fastened fully to the core tubes and thus it does not transfer heat out to the fins because they are not fastened, which makes sense. I will not be getting every thing put back together for another couple of months yet, but very confident of the expected outcome, just based upon the very high quality of the product. If there would be a problem, I am also very satisfied to know that there is someone there that is competent and speaks English. I have no desire to learn Chinese to describe my problem or why it wore out or not doing the job it is suppose to do. I'll post pictures when I get my project finished and some results of performance and improvements over the stock. A single row unit will give me a little more clearance than a 2 row for my A/C condenser. Since my engine is basically stock I do not need a 2 row unit for normal driving here in Michigan. More security when the vehicle is at idle or slow driving when outside temps are high and A/C is on. This is on a '93LT1.
JoeUser: Thanks for the link....I did a search but did not choose the correct key word as I got way too many hits and never did come across anything regarding the single row DeWitts.
If I am unable to convince ABC Radiator that this is covered under warranty I will get the DeWitts single row.....I am done with these plastic tanks!!
In fact I may just forget about the warranty and order the DeWitts......hmmmmm....
Well....the radiator company replaced the radiator 100%....so it is sitting in a box in the garage. I am undecided as to what to do at this point....spend the dollars to get the DeWitts or just put this one in and see what happens.
Sell the replacement while it is new and get a serious duty radiator that will last much longer. I installed a 2row heavy duty all aluminum radiator on my 97 Gran Cherokee many moons ago, and it will probably outlast the life of the Jeep.
We need to know. What is your time worth? Assuming it breaks again in your driveway, fine. Besides being a messy PITA, no biggie. OTOH, what if your radiator breaks when you are 100 miles from home. Now you sit and wait or pay a tow truck to haul it back and do the PITA thing.
Bottom line, how much are you saving and is it worth it? If you have way more time than money, fair enough.
Yep...valid point...time is money. Takes me about an hour to get the radiator out, yes it is messy....hate dealing with coolant....and getting to the inner shroud screws is a big lesson in patience. I did not reverse the nut plates when I did the radiator 2+ years ago as I "thought" I would never do this littel ole task again....so much for that.
Now if the radiator lets go somewhere far from home/garage....yep...another valid point....I would sure not want to have to pay someone to replace the radiator....I can only guess as to how much that would cost.
Do you get the idea that I am leaning towards the DeWitts radiator??
