Default worn key

Hey guys, anyone ever heard of this? Been having trouble starting my 84 with what i think is the original ignition key. I thought i had a bad starter. I would turn it to start and nothing. Checked the starter it was good, it just wasn't getting the signal from the ignition. A retired chevy mechanic that my dad knows said to try it with the other key that i have. I thought it was a joke. Did that and it started right up! This guy said that a badly worn key can cause my problem. I checked the key and it was so badly worn it almost didn't look like the same key. It had been worn to about half the thickness of the other key. What a relief, thought for sure i had a lock cylinder problem or even worse a bad ignition switch. I was having nightmares about tearing into the steering column.

The key switch is connected to a rod that operates the ignition switch lower on the outside of the column, or it could be a bad neutral safety switch, or starter solenoid. It's a pretty simply circuit, and I would doubt a worn key is the problem. Anti theft chips didn't start until 86.

You were right MrWillys....it is not the key. Nor the starter or solonoid. They were replaced thinking that was the trouble to start with. I'm back to square one.
