Looking for headers to replace stock manifolds on my '89. Don't have the big $$$ to spend right now but I do want to upgrade from stock. I will upgrade from these when the money is available but I do want to get some until then. What will be the best bang for my buck? I know they will make it louder with my muff elims and true duals but how much louder can it actually get. :)
I disagree with vader Shorties are about as good as long tube. I know have 3 dyno test to show thatthe improvement from long tubes is not much. I've come to this thoery. If you have a street car, and don't race much then shorties are best. If you are a die hard racer, and drive little on the street then the long tubes are best.
My friend just sold his 96 GS. He had to put the shorties, and cats back on to sell it. The guy who purchased it dynoed it and put out about 5 less HP than it put out with the long tubes. The results where the same for when the friend of mine owned it. He picked up about 5-7 HP. from the longtubes. This car is now putting out around 354RWHP, and was putting out close to 360RWHP. Shalin picked up little as well with his long tube add. Just some food for thought. These are real numbers, and not guesses, as it seems so many header manuf. like to do. Just my .02
You say that if you mainly street drive your car then shorties are better but if you are a die hard racer then long tubes are the way to go. Is the reason behind this price only? My car is mainly street driven with very few racing attempts. I want performance out of it but do not need to spend alot of extra $$$ for 5 hp since I rarely race it.
I say this because long tubes IMO are a big pain in the butt. Any time you have to work on the car you may find they to be a bit of a problem, or add extra work. Since your not a racer the 5-10 extra HP is not hardly worth the extra $$, or pain durning certain maintance. I also think long tubes give that better performance up stairs. So for a racer this is some where their car will see a lot of time. For the red light to red light you're looking at a few seconds. Auto-X person will see high rmps for the course of the run.
I haven't had any ill effects with long tubes other than my collectors leaking, due more to the fact that they aren't manufactured correctly. If you have a heavy gauge correctly sized collector, the gaskets last for years.
I found the installation of my Hooker 2149's moderately easy. It's their price that is a little high. I can send you some pics if you want. I find the plugs are easier to service.
They're not too loud with my 50 series Flowmasters(no cats, straight pipe to the back) any CA board members of CARB reading this.......
vehicle is for off-road purposes only and never driven on highways ;)
compared to any other header for almost any other car. No?
I just sometimes feel like they gouge Vette owners for more money just cuz it's a vette. You know? Yeah, you know.
