It's been awhile since I replaced mine so I'm not sure but it looks like part of it is made of metal, maybe steel. If so you might take one of those extendable magnets and fish around with it and see if you find anything. It may be at the bottom of the tank.
I pulled out my pump recently the sock was so fragile I don't know how it was staying in one piece, I could see pieces of this breaking off and going into the fuel system.
After 20 some years I think it's safe to say change it, got mine at pep boys was about 10 bucks.
New fuel pumps usually come with a new sock. The two I've bought did.
I lost a fuel pump a few years ago when the sock shredded and bits got into the fuel pump and jammed it. I guess the sock was rubbing against the bottom of the tank. This was the original one from GM. It appeared to be made out of black nylon.
