Re: Is hypertech programmer worth it???? (Ericthewolf)
Id say its worth it if you plan to do little mods to the car, and change the tstat and the rear gears. If youre just using it to reset the fans, id say no.

Agreed! I've reprogramed the '94 and did get a SOP difference, but I'd make sure i was satisfied with other things (exhaust and rear gears for example) before throwing $350 at a programmer. Just my 2¢.
Re: Is hypertech programmer worth it???? (Ericthewolf)
My friend bought one and used it in his 95 T/A. He ran each programming (Hypertech and stock) several times at the track and noticed no difference in ET or MPH.
However, he has an M6 car. I know that the Hypertech will make the torque converter lock up later in an A4 car which gives a more performance feel. Ask yourself if this matters and thats the answer of whether you want one or not.

I would have to say the biggest benefit I got was from adjusting the fan temp when I installed a 160¡ T stat. With the stock Tstat (180¡) & programming the car would typically run around 220-240 when it's hot out. With the 160¡ & fans re-programmed coolant temp dosent go over 190¡ on a 90¡ day. It made a big difference at the track as well.
I also was able to recalibrate the spedo when I changed the rear end gearing.
I picked up mine used for $150. I think it was well spent even if I didn't need it for the gears.
If you have a 94-up you'll have to use the programmer or have someone do the re-programming for you. If you do it yourself with the programmer you can make changes whenever you like, things like shift points, rev limter, and gear ratios.
If you have someone else do it you'll have to pay again every time you need something changed. Also if you ever wanted to sell the car or put it back to stock you could sell the HPP and recoup some $.
