Default 1986 electronic climate control issue

Not sure if this is an issue across the board but I know for sure other GM cars have the same issue with the electronic climate control. Anyhow mine only blows out of the top vent no matter what I set it to. Any ideas?

I had this exact same problem with my 86 and fixed it just recently, I took out the programmer from under the drivers side and looked at the circuit board, the two large resistors had burned the board and were now loose, after replacing these resistors (bought some from RadioShack with a higher watt handling to keep them from getting this hit again) it worked just fine. This article should help too if yours isn't as rough as mine and you can just re-solder them. http://www.batee.com/corvette/acrepair/c68pgmrboard/

No vac to the position controller under the dash gives the default position ; defrost

Check the vac hose from pass side rear of the intake through one way valve shown below ( often broken / missing ) by the dist.

Also common for the plastic hard line from the rear port on the valve to the interior to be broken off ( not even found )
where it enters the wiring harness on the firewall

The plastic hard line enters the wiring harness behind the dist, continues as part of that harness , goes through the wiring bulkhead connector
and comes out of the under dash harness inside.

That would imply a different problem because you would have to have vac on all the vent door actuators at the same time for that to happen.
A vent controller problem maybe ?

If you have a C60 system it goes to the HVAC control head.

If you have a C68 system it goes to the HVAC programmer located above the gas pedal.

The default mode for the HVAC is HEAT (by federal law). Air is directed to the defroster in the heat mode, so many people think the air is going there when their HVAC has a problem.
