I am in the middle of rebuilding my engine and while I am in the middle of it, I want to put in 1.6 RR, Headers and possibly a different Cam. Should I replace the stock cam and if so, what should I go with? Any guidence is more than welcome.
the rockers you'll need will be determined by the cam, see sig for the engine i'm in the middle of completing. the GM zz4 and TPIS zz9 cam are probably 2 of the best off the shelf TPI choices for stock heads and a stock bottom end. both however use 1.5 rockers but valve lift really comes up. the zz4 is .474/.510 lift at 208/221dur@.50 which is quite a bit larger than stock, the zz9 is even slightly bigger but made on the same basic pattern as the zz4, just turned up a hair.
those cams may work for the newer motors because those motors are fitted for a roller cam right, what if you have a older motor like mine is a 85 I talked to tpis and they said that the best cam for a stock motor with flat top heads like mine, that their tapper cam .495/.495 would work good. what do you think?
The Crane 2040 compucam I put in my car was $134. for cam and lifters. I am not ashamed to admit I am on a budget. My stock engine was a flat tapet and so I didn't feel the need to go with an expensive roller. It runs great. I'm happy and I am the only one I feel the need to impress. I think there are some Ferrari's out there that won't keep up. :chevy :D
Hey Jeffie86, I am in the same boat as you, on a budget. Thank you for the info on the costs. That helps me budget this. I am going ahead and using the 1.6 RRs, and I think I am going to use the cam you posted unless I find a better one at that price range. I can not afford $300 bucks for a cam right now.
Just remember that when you switch to 1.6s you are putting more stress on the pushrods than 1.5s. I can vouch for the cam with 1.5s as that is the setup I am using now but I might drop in some 1.6s later just to see what happens. My engine makes lots of power, thanks to my friends here on the forum. :smash:   :D
Stock rockers are "about " 1.5, they don't often test out that high. if you replace them with good aftermarket rollers you will be getting a true ratio. Also consider that 1.6 rockers increase the "effective" lift AND duration since the valve lift at the industry standard .050" will occur sooner with a 1.6 rocker. :yesnod:
the guy just said he had a 85, that's a flat tappet & about $100-150 for a cam, lifters are fifty bucks, i would go with the TPIS advice. they did quite a bit of TPI cam work.
