Default 84 odometer not working

How hard is it to check to see if the cable is attached under the dash? Any way to get to it from the radio opening etc.

If the dash has to come out where do I find the directions to do it? Any threads with pictures?

There is no cable. Its an electronic motor, inside the dash cluster.

To get it out, you need to remove the trim panel from the cluster, and radio area. I also take out the screws holding the dash pad. Now your to the cluster. There are 4 (I think 8mm) screws, 2 bottom below blinker lights, and 2 on the outside upper corners......Now for the hard part. You need to tip the cluster forward, while lifting up on the dash pad, and pull to the left. Be really careful so you dont break the tach on the lock cylinder. Once you have it tipped, and pulled out a bit, you can see the connector on the right side. You need to unplug it, and the cluster will come the rest of the way out. h

I guess the screws for the dash pad arent hard to find? Im the kind of person who really needs pictures but if you say theyre easy to find Im ready to give it a try.

Where can I get details on how this system works. For example what makes the motor turn where does it get its voltage from, how its related to the miles, is the motor fed pulses or steady dc.

Its not too hard, but it takes patients. Once you have the cluster out, take the back off ,and you can see where the odometer plugs into the board, and I believe there are 2 screws holding it in place. heres where you need to look, http://www.batee.com/ lots of knowledge, super nice. Heres what youre looking for, and they dont last long, so if you want it, buy it quick. h

PS a FSM is what you need to answer your Q's.....With pics!

You can do a forum search for most of your questions,

But it's a stepper motor fed by a driver circuit and it's fed pulses.

The motor is HARD to find, don't know if they make them new, used is available from Battee super helpful guy and he sells most of the parts needed to refurbish the cluster.

A month ago he had a used stepper motor available just email him.

Default odometer not working wire off maybe

Theres a wire with a 2 pin connector on it coming out from under the dash, it looks like pink and grey wires might be pink and light green. Could that be why the speedometer and odometer arent working?

I was trying to upload a photo of it, but cant find the `manage attachment` button. Where the heck is it?

There is a metal shield on the back of the cluster that blocks access to the odometer. You need to take the cluster out to get access to that shield. You need to remove the cluster bezel to do that.

You do not have to remove the center cluster bezel.

I suggest putting a rag/towel over the steering column to avoid scratching it. The metal shield tends to scratch things. I also put 2" wide masking tape on the flat "platform" on the left side of the steering column. I scratched that area when I took my cluster out a few years ago.

The cluster mounting screws are 7mm, as are most of the dashboard screws. There are two in the upper corners and two hidden next to the steering column on each side. The screws in the cluster are all 5.5mm.

Watch out for the connectors. They have latches on the back that must be released before the connectors can be unplugged. On my car they are metal and must be lifted up so they unhook from the connector on the cluster. Lift the latch and pull out the connector. I think in later years they went to plastic latches that you can squeeze to unhook them. I know that's true of the ECM and the cluster uses the same connectors.

You got lucky because I currently have a problem in my cluster and my dash is apart so I can take a picture. This shows a small screwdriver under the latch to release it. As you can see my center cluster bezel is still in place. The round object to the left of the screwdriver handle with the black label on it is the stepper motor for the odometer.

Default vss

Well I had someone look at it today he unbolted the vss at the transmission and showed it to me. One of the posts where the connections are is broken off, and the shaft has so much play it wobbles like a kids toy top.

He put it back together without the motor and said it wouldnt leak, but I drove a 100 feet and back and its dripping. So now I know at least one reason the speedometer and odometer arent working, but now I cant drive it.

Should it be able to go back together without that motor in and not leak?

Should I try to find a new one or used one?

Theres a metal plate that fits over it it was bent could that be why its dripping? Will a new plate or cover piece come with it?

More questions than I started with now.
