Default L98 Accessory Noise

Hello All,
I've got an L98, 6-speed with 129K miles on it. Within the last month and a half or so I noticed a "clunk-clunk-clunk" coming from under the hood. I was initially alarmed that the engine was headed south, but after listening to it and monitoring how the car was performing, it just didn't seem like in internal noise. It seems like it's coming from the accessories some where. The noise is really prevalent when coming down a hill letting off the gas and/or braking, and it will doing braking to stop on level ground. It only does randomly in my driveway when it is parked in an up hill direction, the randomness also makes me not think it's and internal sound. After doing some research around the forum, others seem to think that it may be coming from the water pump, but I didn't see a post that definitively said what corrected the problem. What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.

Easiest way to diagnose is to take the belt off and turn the accessories by hand. You could also get a mechanics stethoscope; they are cheap and work great.

Smog/air pumps are notorious for making noise just before they fail.

I have not confirmed 100% yet, but it's an accessory alright, the clutch/flywheel accessory. That qualifies as an accessory, right? If it is that, then I can't fault the car too much, I've owned it 10 years and have beat the snot of it, and I'm surprised that the clutch has held up as well as it has. Anywho, any clutch/flywheel advice that any of you have will be very much appreciated. I don't think I'll be doing any modifications, car isn't worth enough to warrant it. Thanks for your help.

your most likely have a DM flywheel. You will need to convert to a single mass flywheel and clutch assembly (traditional style). DMF are not made or available, I have the same issue and just ordered from Carolina Clutch the whole package, SKU: 111077 Part No: 04-113/1S $695 . I will let you know how this works out.

Hey, thanks for the tip, I really appreciate that. I'm having a more trained ear listen to the car this Friday to see if my diagnosis is correct before I dole out any serious cash. There is a chance that it's a hung up starter gear, which would be a blessing, but I'm prepared for flywheel. Thanks again.

Finally installed the flywheel and clutch from Carolina clutch, I sent this over to a Balancing machine shop and they matched the balance of the DM flywheel, cost me 70 bucks but well worth it. Installed the new flywheel and works great. This definitely solved most of the running noise from the old flywheel, the ZF 06 is not nearly as loud. If this turnout to be your problem, I highly recommend Carolina Clutch for this.

Thanks
