Default Cooling an 86......

I have pulled the radiator and cleaned up the debris between it and the condenser.....

When I'm driving down the highway i can get the temp down to around 200 (with a 195 degree thermostat, but when I stop at a light the temp just starts going up and up and up.........

This happens with both the AC on and off.......

What could be causing this????? Water pump???? Radiator cap??????

Any ideas??????

Fans are working properly, just sems weird that when there is air flow it stays pretty cool, but the temp just jumps right up (8 degrees within a minute) while sitting at a light......

it was 98 degrees yesterday when this was happening.......

Maybe, I'm just paranoid, but I don't like seeing the 230 mark while sitting in traffic.....

Do you have a good 50/50 water antifreeze mix? Have you tried any after market water additives (redline, etc). With the car sitting at idle, A/C on, both fans on, stand beside your car. Can you feel the air being moved out from under the car. Check to see if the fans seem to be turning fast. They should make a fair amount of noise. Check to see if you have all the pieces associated with the air flow system. My car came without the large black plastic air dam pieces under the car. Do the radiator hoses feel mushy?

I live in Lincoln and my 90 has been sitting dead in the middle temps, even in traffic. Just replaced both fan motors, installed all the correct parts, taped arond some air exit points, Redline "water wetter", and life is good, or a while anyway. Never lasts too long.

Just install a manual fan switch, then you can turn them on/off at your leisure.

Running in clean air with 90+ degree weather my temps stay around 190 +/- 2 degrees. In traffic they never excede 220 with Aux fan on. I have factory water pump and 190 thermostat. I did notice my temps dropped when I changed my front Y pipe to a catless Y pipe and 3 way main cat.

I hit 235 one hot day in light traffic with the standard thermostat. I have a convertible and was not even using the AC. The next weekend I went to the local auto-parts store and changed to a lower temp thermostat.
