Hello everyone, I have a 91 L98 with the twin electric cooling fans. The lower fan has failed, and I was wondering if anyone has replaced one of these with a pep boys or autozone type, and if so what brand and model number? I am looking for something I can bolt in there, any help would be greatly apprieciated. Thanks!
Re: Cooling fan failure...please help (soundkillr)
Are you sure the fan itself is the problem? It could be the fan switch which should be located on the head. Or even simpler yet, it coule be what happened to mine... simply needed new connectors.
Re: Cooling fan failure...please help (L98IROCZ89)
I dont know what the deal with it is. I pulled the fan and ran a wire directly to the battery. The wires got hot REAL fast, the fan did work, but again the wires got really hot, indicating to me there is a short in the fan

A stupid question, but did you use a heavy enough guage wire for the jump from the battery to the fan?

No not a stupid question at all. No the wire was plenty big enough. I pulled the motor apart, and can see where it is failing. The magnetic wiring loom inside the fan, has been over heated and it burned....

Hello
Several weeks ago I replaced both fans on my 90. The fans are available from GM for around $50 each. The right (lower) fan is easy to replace. Unplug connector, 4 bolts holding the bracket to the air dam assembly, and it pretty much falls to the ground. The factory kit includes new screws for fan assembly, locktite already applied. Even has descent instructions for fan swap out. The factory units had a small foam screen around the motor vent. I supsect these little units see lots of fine dust, not good for electric motors. Let us know if you need anymore help. Now getting the left upper fan out, another story.
