Something is not working correctly, you are running very rich and your cats will be toast soon if not already. Ecm is getting a lean signal and is beefing it up.
I agree with leesvet about pulling codes although if something is active the ses light should be on. I also do not think just because it is acting up it will nessary throw a code. It does sound like you are running rich. there are a few things that could cause this. Injectors on top of the list all the way down to temp sensor out of wack. A good scan would be where I would start to make sure things are doing what they should
1) I had a water in gas situation that's probably not totally been worked/flushed out of the system yet
2) today, I took it for another short test run, and it stalled on the way back: I limped it into the yard, and restarted: found injectors doing more dribbling vs spraying...so lean condition fer sure..
I wonder if the FP sock got waterlogged & isn't doing it's job now.
I probably also need a reading of fuel pressure...
A bad CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) or bad connector or bad wiring will cause the ECM to think the engine is cold and richen the mixture. The CTS that the ECM uses has a two wire connector. I don't know where it's located on an '84. Probably on the front of the intake manifold near the thermostat.
well, I've had the intake off tons while doing injector work, but always replace the one vacuum line.
The car sat in someones garage for a long time, I wonder if there's "stuff" up in the exhaust?
could be any of these I suppose..
I like that vacuum page, I'll see about doing a test using the gauge.
Thanks fellas,
