I have a question that has probably been asked but I cannot find where. I have removed the AC and air pump. I have a air pump delete pulley but not a ac delete pulley. I routed the belt on the back side of tensioner. Works great. Now I want to eliminate the tensioner pulley. But the water pump will be turning in the opposite direction.
I have a duralast water pump I replaced about 3 months ago.
Will it hurt anything if I reverse the pump direction and keep same pump?
I reversed the water pump rotation when I eliminated all the AC and AIR equipment. My 385 has had no cooling issues down here in south east Louisiana. I'll swap to a proper rotation when it fails.
I realize you just replaced your w.p., but I had to replace mine anyways, so I went with one for an '82, eliminated my a/c, air pump and tensioner similar to 89Red's in this link: Pics of 89Red's (about 6th post down)
I found a lot of info in that thread that you may find helpful.
Bottom line is you can't reverse the wp direction(without changing pumps) & expect it to work right. Yes, you can use a different pump to get that direction.
Why not get an A/C delete kit? They are fairly inexpensive (got a Dorman setup for my '87 from Amazon for less than $32 shipped)
Using that kit, the water pump will turn in the correct direction. Without a tensioner, there is no effective way to get the correct tension on the serp belt.
If you look at the pics mentioned, the alternator mounting had to be modded to use Heim joints to adjust belt tension. With an A/C delete kit, you can use the belt you already have and the tensioner works as it should.
Thanks for the info. My main goal is to only have the crank, ps, alt, and wp pulleys. I am also considering taking out the heater box and modifying it so the defroster and heater still work. Any thoughts on this mod?
