Default 84 transmission help!

we just rebuilt the engine and had the trans rebuilt for my friends 84 vette, and the trans is slipping above 2500RPM, it does go into lock up, but its like its searching for a gear, shifting up and down then slips, fluid level is correct, Im stumped on this one. its a 700R4, we converted the cross fire to a 4bbl and put a TCI lock up kit in the trans. another thing it only took 10 qts when we started filling it.

..... Did you re-install and properly adjust the TV cable from the trans to the carb throttle linkage ? ... Most carb mfrs will supply a bracket for the TV cable attachment that has been engineered to have the correct pull and geometry .............

The purpose of the TV cable is to raise the pressure inside the trans so it doesn't slip when you open the throttle and start producing more torque. You should be 189,000% sure that cable is adjusted correctly or your transmission can slip and burn up the frictions. See this (read ALL of it -- it has multiple pages):

http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php

Lockup happens inside the torque converter and has NOTHING to do with the gears. The torque converter will lock in ANY gear. On my car it locks at 40 MPH. Speed is the only criterion for lockup.

One thing I saw when I was driving around with a trans pressure gauge hooked up is that the pressures go WAY down when the trans gets hot. If the trans is slipping when it's cold then it's going to slip a LOT when it's hot.

The fluid level should be checked HOT and idling. When you shut off the engine the fluid drains out of the trans cooler in the radiator and makes it look fuller than when the engine is running. Watch out for the marks on the trans dip stick. They are PINTS, not quarts.

the fluid level is correct, and I found out something else, when its is OD selection it starts in 2nd gear, the only way to get 1st is to put it down in 1st gear.
