Noisy fuel regulator
I know this is an old topic, but after looking into this problem this week and finding people still having the same problem on a number of web sites, and no solution. Heres my best guess. The noise seems to come from the fuel pressure regulator, but even after replacing the regulator it continues, this makes people think it must be mechanical, maybe lifters. A few months ago I swapped my TPI system to a new motor. Nothing other than the TPI made the move, that is other than the noise! So it has to be related to the injection system. My new setup has Aeroquip rubber fuel hose. While I was looking for the problem I noticed that I could feel the hose pulsate with the sound. This makes me think that what is happening is what's call hydraulic or water hammering. You might have a faucet in your house that makes a banging noise when you shut it off, this is the same thing. On your home plumbing the fix is to simply add a small vertical pipe with air trapped in it to absorb the blow of the extra water pressure when you turn off the faucet. Any ideas how to apply this fix to a TPI system? You know, without burning down the car!

There is documentation of this bumping/chattering in the TPi fuel system. SOME TPI cars got a dampener installed in the fuel return line just above the fuel filter. Others did not.
Mine has it but I cannot say if it does anything.
I do not have any fuel system noises other than some mild inj tic sometimes..
