Default Clearing ECM trouble codes

Does anyone have a clue why disconnecting my battery does not clear the trouble codes. I have left it unhooked for a couple of hours and the same ignition misfire and others are still there.

I caused this mess by trying to degrease my motor. I used a car wash degrease then rinsed with high pressure. The engine was ok but when I went around a corner it stated misfiring like crazy. Barely ran. I went to my shop and blew off everything with compressed air. Runs ok but Service light is lit and codes wont go away....

Default What codes?

If the trouble still exists the code will come back.

A code indicates you have a problem;
clearing the codes does not make the problem that caused the codes go away

You need to FIX something to get rid of the code(s)

When asking for help on here you should always state year / engine , etc .
Many differences 84 - 96.

I assume you have a LT1 with the front mount "Opti Spark" dist which you have filled with water ; A big no -no on those engine.
You may fix the problem by dissembling the Opti and drying it out ; you may also be up for a new one

It's an L98. Right now the idle is too high, slightly rough. Accelerates fine. I disconnected the battery for over an hour. Then I hooked it back up, and without starting the engine, read the codes. The same ones were still there. The codes came from when I had water on the motor.
It misfired and barely ran until I blew compressed air on motor. Then It seems ok, except for idle high (1500) and service engine light.

So my problem is how to clear the codes so that I can see what the current setup is, not when I foolishly tried to clean the motor....

welcome to the forum ...GIVE them the code....high idle indicates something is wrong...they can help you but you need to be specific....

Most importantly do you know how to read the codes?
Or are you simply trying to clear the SES lite?

Sorry you can't use backyard shop logic to fix an ECM problem

It takes about 1 second to clear the codes. The easiest way is to open this connector (item 2 in the diagram):
