Default computer does not see the car.

I have a xp laptop computer. I also have tunerpro rt and datamaster, the latest version 4.01 I have this cable http://www.obd2allinone.com/sc/toplevel.asp?cat=2
But I cant get either program to connect with the car. Is there a driver I need for the usb cable?
FWIW I have a old windows 98 computer with a serial port running datamaster 3.5 and it works.

Edit to add, Mostly, what I need is the ability to data log and send it out. The problem with my old computer is, 1. no way to transfer data other then a floppy. and then load it on my desktop to email file and 2. battery is dead. Have to use a 12volt converter.

Go to fdichip.com and update your drivers. I bought a cable from a guy recently and was never able to make it work. Moates.net has cables that work.

could you be a little more specific on which drivers? I think you are talking about the usb to serial section, but after that, which ones?

Thanks for your help.

Let me try this again. Go to www.ftdichip.com and click on drivers, and then vcp drivers. Sorry bout that.

OK that makes sense. Even a dummy like me can understand that. I just need to check and see if I have a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system. Then hook my laptop into my modem.
Thanks again. I will give that a try and report back.

XP is 32 bit ( FWIW only Win 7 is available in a 64 bit version )

Once you have correctly installed the USB driver for the ALDL cable you have to go into the laptop settings
( Control panel / System/ Device drivers / Ports )
and see what Comms port the laptop has allocated to the USB adapter.

You need to put that Comm port into the TP settings in order for it to hook up.

IIRC
DM finds the correct Comms port automatically

The FTDI driver also works on a Macintosh, so you can run Windows under Parallels or some other emulator and get good results with the usual tuner programs.

If you are a Mac user and want to play with a Mac-only version (source code included), see my version of pyOBD (I call it MacOBD-II) here:

http://www.misterpeachy.com/OSX/OSX.html

pyOBD was written for a UNIX machine and it has multiple data conversion problems, so my version is much better. The DTC part doesn't work (I don't know why).

Here is the link to the proper drivers. I have had that cable and it works great. http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm Choose windows xp.

OK I got the driver downloaded and installed properly. Got Datamaster working. Took awhile. Figured out I had to set it for port com 6. Thanks to everyone for your help!!
Now I have another problem. When I set it to record, it will record for a small time, maybe 10-15 seconds, then it will light the data ok button red and start reconnecting again. Any ideas? It does reconnect, but it also keeps dropping out. Thanks again.

Have you assigned a file name? I built a page on how to use this program.

yes, I assigned the file name. Needed to do that to get it to start recording. It will record (im using 10 frames per second) And it will stop and then restart.
An example is on rec. #280 it shows 116 seconds. Then rec.#281 is 123 seconds. When in playback I don't have the record screen and that is the one that would keep showing itself reconnecting if that makes sense.
I will go to your link above and read it as well. Thanks for your help.

There's a rumor that Datamaster operates better on a com port of 4 or less. Do you have one available that is less? If so, give that a try.

Is it simple to switch? I do not use computers much, and everything I do, I have to read up on how. I can start searching on how to do this. Google is my friend!!

Its really weird. At times I only show ports 3 and 4 as options. They will not connect when chose. But when 6 shows as available, it works. But thanks for your pointers.
