Default TV cable and transmissions problems

My 700R4 does not go into 3rd @WOT. Based on that description and without looking at my tranny or driving my car, my corvette mechanic says I need a rebuild.

I just want to make sure that all of my options are exhausted before I do that.

My TV cable is kinked/bent as you can see in the photos and I also noticed that there is alot of play in the cable (exposed part of cable). Most of the the slack does come out when I open the throttle linkage.

Is everybodys tv cabel that loose?

I did reset the tension twice following the instructions from the Helms Manual, that didn't seem to help.

Should I ratchet the cable one click at a time going toward the fire wall to see if that helps? (ratchet one, go test drive...ratchet one, go test drive ETC.)

Should I invest in a new cable?

Looking for any help or similar scenarios you've encountered.

Mine looked about like that after the Superram installation. What's important is the tightness of the cable at WOT...it should be VERY taught. Search the web for TV cable adjustment, there's at least one page that describes the adjustment process...

...hey, does the behavior change with your floor mat removed?

I noticed that my when tranny needed rebuilding, it WOULD shift down from 4th to third, but it was 'lazy' shifting back to fouth afterwards.

I don't think the TV cable has any effet at WOT, the govener (sp?) sets the limit when your at WOT.
The TV cable only sets the line pressure at part throttle. Which controls the shift point and firmness.

I hope you don't need a rebuild, but the description points in that direction.
Drop the pan and see if there is any clutch material in there, that will tell you for sure.

Chuck

Not too sure what to make of that. If you like, give my tranny guy a call. He built my last one,and it survived over 21,000 miles behind my 383. His name's grant 203.933.0053 Tell Him I sent you.

CHUCK BUDDY...your in luck..I think Iam like the foremost expert in TV Cables lol...here on the web....

I have looked at your picture...and right away buddy...your cable is not correct....first that kink and bind is not looking too good...but I honestly don't think that is your problem....you see....

You cable is not adjusted correctly....so do this...

Push in that little button on the box just below where you see the kink.....ok..now....take and pull the cable all the way toward the windshield on your car.....so that the black little plunger thingy is almost inside the beginning to that box...ok...now....take and hold that button in WHILE HOLDING THE CABLE...its gonna wanna pull forward....hold it back....ok.....while doing this.....have someone push open the accerator to WOT.....the steel cable inside that plastic housing your holding onto very tightly...is gonna move and click all by itself....when its done, you should end up with the plunger thingy being just about flush with the beginning of that box.....(for you this is about 1/2 inch further inside to where it is right now)....

if it does not end up being or working out like this...then something is wrong and get a new TV cable put in and adjusted in this manner...

bottom line is you have to have that plunger thing almost flush to the beginning of the box...

this is absolute reset....and I can see yours is way far off....this is gonna result in low tv pressure..and eventually burned up tranny....not too mention....your tranny must be shifting pretty strangly.....your first gear shift at minimum throttle...(like just touching the pedal) should be 8-15 mph usually 9 or 10....

anything else I can assist you with let me know....Iam just finally getting mine to shift right...and this tv cable seems to be the key......its like the slightest little adjustement is huge response to the way the tranny operates.....

hope this helps

I have to disagree with what is the correct TV adjustment by just looking at the picture. Mine looks just like his (except no kink) and it is set perfectly. I do agree that he should try to readjust the TV cable just to make sure it is properly set. I believe the proper way to set the cable is to push it in fully towards the firewall and then give it WOT and let it ratchet itself into the correct adjustment. Ive often had to make some fine adjustments after this process, but this should at least get it close to determine if it is the TV cable.

Mine looked like that after the adjutment according to the Haynes manual and it shifted like poopy. RPMs were way to high before it would shift. I finally just pushed in the button, let the little thingy snap back and has worked fine since.

Thanks for the responses. I have tried to set it 3 times with the same results. No 3rd gear at WOT and the pulnger ends up right where it is after the reset racheting.

VetteNoob, what do you do to fine tune it? Rachet the cabe one click at at time and go test drive.

Yeah, until it feels right to me, but getting it adjusted based on the directions provided on this post should get it to shift if the TV was the problem.

Here is what my shop manual says for no 2-3 shift.

1. Converter
- Internal Damage

2. Governor ASM
- Valve stuck
- Drive gear retaining pin missing or loose
- Governor Weights Binding
- Governor drive gear damaged
- Governor support pin in case too long or too short

3. Oil Pump
- Stator shaft sleeve scored or off location

4. Valve Body
- 2-3 valve train stuck
- Accumulator valve stuck
- Space plate or gaskets incorrect, mispositioned, or damaged
- Throttle Valve stuck
- TV limit valve stuck

5. Input Housing ASM
- clutch plates worn (3-4 or forward)
- Excessive clutch plate travel
- Cut or damaged piston seals (3-4 or forward)
- Porosity in 3-4 clutch housing or piston
- 3-4 piston check ball stuck, damaged, or not sealing
- Restricted apply passages
- Forward clutch piston retainer and ball ASM not seating
- Sealing ***** loose or missing

6. Case
- 3rd accumulator retainer and ball ASM not seating

7. 2-4 Servo ASM
- 2nd apply piston seals missing, cut, or damaged
- Servo pin seals missing, cut, or damaged

Hope some part of that helps.
