Default [4+3]: Split up my old one today.

For those of you that didn't see my other post here in C4 Tech, the "new" used 4+3 I bought to replace my other one blew up yesterday. Well it didn't blow up, but the overdrive unit toasted its clutches apparently. Yay. Goodie. I got about 5.5k miles out of it and it had about 77k miles on it when I bought it. I guess the previous owner didn't take care of it and change it's fluids & filter routinely. :( I have no other solid explanation for why it went. Oh well, for $400 I can't complain too much.

Anyways the overdrive unit on my original tranny an MK2 0.68:1 unit was still good at the time I pulled it out at 166k miles. So the idea now is to swap that one onto the good ST-10 in the car now since the original ST-10 blew up two teeth on the cluster gear inside of it.

Draining the ST-10 of it's gear oil.

A whole ton of metal chips, flakes, and other misc grunge on the magnetic drain plug.

The two gear teeth sheered off from the cluster gear (rearmost gear for 1st and reverse).

Split apart, nice and clean huh?! :) (p.s. That is a 454 crankshaft on the lathe under the towel. :D)

OD unit.

Driver's side of ST-10 with side cover off.

Tailshaft of ST-10.

OD unit in our parts tank.

OD unit looking a little better.

Same.

Where the two teeth sheered off.

Both cleaned up.

Same.

Same.

Here is an old pic from when I originally pulled it out of the car.

That, the sand blaster, the lathes, the air compressor, and the press make things really easy sometimes.

Ever hear that the more complicated the plumbing the easier it is to stop up the drain? I think that's the case with that whole 4+3 tranny. It looks like you've got a handle on it though. Looks like a real nice job cleaning it all up.

Are you going to rebuild the other one so you can have another replacement waiting? I think I would, never know when something bad is going to happen.

My garage has a lot of tools, but no parts tank. Sometimes something like that would just be handy. Best of luck on getting it back together ASAP.

Yeah that is the plan. I already have an overdrive rebuild kit sitting here that I bought for cheap money about a year and a half ago from somebody who sold their 4+3 car. I'll either rebuild this OD to normal spec, or try to find out what is required in "toughening it up" if it is possible. :) I also have to purchase a new cluster gear and inspect the other internals of my original ST-10 so that I'll have a fully functional spare hanging around again.

In addition to awesome pics with great detail...you certainly have a nice environment in which to work! All those goodies. All you're missing is a garage with a lift!
