Just received a new cap from Eckler's for my 1986, and it didn't have the gasket on the underside of the cap. I called their tech line, and they said they don't come with any gasket. I thought that the gasket was an important part of getting a good seal so the siphon effect works properly after each heating and cooling cycle. The gasket on my old cap is completely shot and unusable. If truly needed, anyone have a part number or sourcing location? I have no problem returning my current one to Eckler's if someone can suggest where to purchase one that comes with the gasket and looks factory stock.
funny, same thing just happened to me! i happened to have a new cap that i bought for my old iroc and never installed, it had the gasket so i swiped it from there. they sell that one at all the auto parts store on the help wall, itll look just like yours but not have a stick, so you can get that gasket from there

They don't need a gasket because it is vented anyway. The tank is for boilover and
should only have a tiny bit of Antifreeze in it. If something comes out into it your engine was too hot.

Xrav22: My tank gets a little wet around the cap, so I know it's not sealing 100% with it's current gasket. I'll try to grab one from another cap from our local store.......
The gasket won't do anything useful. If you look at the cap, it's got HUGE holes in it.
The hose from the radiator to the coolant overflow tank goes to the bottom of the overflow tank so it only sucks in coolant (and not air) when the system cools down.

The tank should always have about a quart of coolant in it at all times. There are two coolant level marks on the front right part of the tank body and the words Cold and Hot. Keep the tank filled at the Cold line
As the coolant heats up and pressure increases beyond the radiator cap pressure rating, coolant will flow into the expansion tank. Once the coolant starts to cool down, any vacuum in the cooling system will draw coolant from the expansion tank back into the cooling system.
