Have an 87 coupe that I've had a couple years, did a new radiator this past spring and put new fluid in and the car had a 160 degree thermostat in it and now it runs from 160-170 all the time, unless it's idling of course. Is this too low of a temperature to operate at? Prior to the new radiator it ran like 170-185 all the time. I know these engines are safe up to the 240 region and I have had mine up in the 230s before and that doesn't concern me, just want to make sure that I won't be experiencing any issues. I have driven it on 4 200+ mile trips with the new radiator and it seems ok, got about 23 mpg mixed highway/local driving, with me, my girlfriend and our bags, running through the Harriman park area of New York (hilly). I like that it runs cool but when does it begin to effect combustion etc?
I guess I gotta keep an eye on the oil temp, if it's 185 or higher I'm content. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Unfortunately I'm getting ready to winterize my baby so it won't matter soon.

a 180 thermostat is about perfect. You would need a custom chip or fan switch to get the fans to come on correctly though.
