Re: Ed Wright Chip? Buy the PRoGram Myself? Covert to MAF?? HELP!!! (5abivt)
It all really depends on what you want to do! I purchased a chip from Mr Wright for $400.00 bucks for my L383. Popped the chip in and "well' it did run better. But I needed more. My engine had more potential so I data logged my vette with Diacom GM Plus and discovered I wasn't hitting the marks in several areas. My understanding is Mr Wright will work with you if you run into the problem I had BUT I wanted to know more so off I went ( I've been working on computers for over 20 years) to purchase a few chips. I dug my EPROM burner and my UV light out of my closet and away I went. I ended up buying Tunercat and use it for the most part as my programming environment for tuning. I played with several other programs but settled for Tunercat for its off-the-shelf and ease of use qualities. After running several chips through the ECM I fell into another pit. That's were this forum helped. Mentors like Grumpy will steer you straight when it comes to understanding the data you generate and log. Going back through old post will get you going in the right direction too.
If your ready for all that and more, then build your own chip. The satisfaction knowing that your car is running the best that it can is Awesome! And someday, maybe you could help out the next guy!

If you haven't done any major motor work and just add-ons such as K&N, cat-back exhaust get the Fastchip. I just installed one for $175 and I'm quite pleased with the results.

Re: Ed Wright Chip? Buy the PRoGram Myself? Covert to MAF?? HELP!!! (9vette3)
I to got a ed wright chip for my 383. It got the car running, but it is not at 100%. He will work with you, and I found his people to be very nice. My first chip was bad, and they took care of it right away. I sent my chips back to him a few times and the car ran better eachtime. But I got tired paying to send it back (shipping cost only, but adds up). I've since convertored to the 730 ECM, and have programed my own chip. Still working on it but, the car already runs better with the chip I have made.
Re: Ed Wright Chip? Buy the PRoGram Myself? Covert to MAF?? HELP!!! (5abivt)
what do you mean by converting to the 730 ecm?? is this an upgraded ecm?? does anyone know of any chips that are better than stock ones??
88_vette has a 1988 corvette with the older MAF system.. infact 85-89 have that older system. When we gfet to a bigger HP motor most of us convert to the 90-91 (90-92 f-body) MAP (Speed Density) system. This rids us of the older restrictive MAF and we now have a MAP set-up. The 1992-1993 are similar but add a few functions that eh L98 cars did not have. One of those being the dual O2 sensors to be able to see the rich/lean condition of each bank instead of the one sensor.
If I were you I would go to http://www.thirdgen.org and read the PROM intro article. This will give you link as to where to buy equipment. Most questions you have can be answered here but that is a great article to start with.
I would also keep the ECM and set-up you have. tuned properly it will be all you need.
