Not an L98 guy at all and there are plenty of them here.

but....

Are you talking about the coolant temp sensor/switch? Isn't that a common pipe thread? If so take it to Home Depot and buy a plug that is the same thread. Use the plug as a thread chase. When the sensor/switch will go in more smoothly, put pipe dope on the threads for final install.

In that case the only thing that occurs to me is I see you are in Washington. Is the iron head really cold? Is it a matter of thermal expansion where a cold head has a smaller hole? If you put your 1/2" pipe in the freezer for a while will it thread in ok? Of course if you're working in heated space then this whole idea is out.

Sometimes when I can't get a thread started I can find success by holding the piece square to the hole but turn it slowly backwards CCW as if I were loosening it until it clicks and the threads are lined up then CW forward and it starts.

Maybe try a pipe thread tap and try to clean the threads up you probably had a little rust run out when you removed the sensor?

I did this 5x last week playing around with my mini fan temps.
Do not use a ratchet to start it. Do this with engine cold . Put right hand on top of engine and with left hand go in between egr tubes and try to start the threads. You can't see because you can't look down at that point. Just feel the force like Yoda. My challange has been not to loose a gallon of anti freeze just to switch sensors. It is a bit of an very odd angle, but dont start it with a ratchet or it can strip with fingers won't strip. I used long spark plug boot needlenose to put connector on and off easily.
Good luck
