Hey all,
I want to get the MSD 6 Al, does any one know what the MSD coil part number I need as well? Any thing else you can think of for a hotter spark? Thanks all!
I would only look at this if I was going with some forced induction or a high-revving engine. I once wanted to put one in the 398 but decided against it, seemed a waste.
After installing it, start marking your calendar to see how many days you got before it crapped out on you.
This. One of the techs in our shop put a 6AL on his built 396 Chevelle last year and he wound up getting the unit replaced three times under warranty. Finally gave up and went to an ACCEL super coil and Taylor cap and rotor. Car runs fine and still runs high 11's with mods.
And as mentioned, on stock L98 motors or even mildly modded ones, you may not see any real SOTP improvement with a 6A or 6AL. Good wires, good cap and rotor, and the right plugs are all that's really needed. Even the stock coil will provide enough power for mild mods.
My 6AL box went out within probably no more than 2 years.......removed it; don't notice any difference.....other than the fact the car would start upon removal when it shot craps.....
I don't think I got 6 months out of mine before it died. Same with the replacement.
I was running a 7k+rpm motor. I actually ran 3 or 4 tenths quicker when I disconnected it at the track. That was with a good running one. When they died, the motor would barely run.
I'd spend the money on a decent coil and keep that useless piece of magazine propaganda out of your car. A healthy GM HEI is good for some pretty high RPM. I never had any problems with missing even at higher RPMs.
Ive had mine for several years. Only put about 10,000 miles on it though. Cant say it runs better with it or not. The main reason I wanted it is for the rev limiter. Its better then the factory rev limiter.
