Hello, this is my first post. I bought my 85 (42,000 miles) last week and have been tinkering everyday - thanks to the forum  . I have been reading at the forum for the last 6 months and would like to thank everyone for all of the tips and information. I read somewhere that you can bypass your throttle body to improve HP. Is this true? If so, what if any, are the consequences. I live in CT but will not be driving the car all year long - so freezing temperatures are not a concern.
Thanks Poppy - now the real question - how do i do it? By the way - seeing that we have the same car (i forgot to mention that my car is a z51) what would be the next mod that i should make (for under $1,000)- one book i read said that i should save my money until i can afford to replace the stock cam shafts? - I dont think that i could do this on my own -
I'm at the "bolt on stage" at this point. What do you think? Thanks - Paul

Re: Throttle Body Bypass? (luck38)
Hi there and welcome...Names Jeff.....I did this to my L-98 about 3 weeks ago....works good no problems...I am not sure you get any real hp gains....but hey...every little horse helps....so even if it is just 1 hp....
I live in MA and work in Agawam, about 15 mins from CT....if you travel at all near MA let me know...more than happy to show you whats gotta be done and can give you a couple other tips on what to do...not to mention, always look forward to meeting another vetter....
Welcome aboard :flag
This mod helps when it is hot to reduce the air intake temperature. I have been driving year round for two years without any problems. I don't think icing is a problem and believe it is mainly for emissions purposes. Make sure that you connect the hoses together, Your heat won't work if you don't.
Check out the Tech Tips section, there are other things that you can do for cheap.
Keep those questions coming, we like to help.
You will never feel this in the sense of a performance gain. It is more conceptual than anything- why heat the air as its going into your intake? Doesnt make sense, so just remove it. No one really knows how much cooler the air is when its done, but its an easy free mod that gets you going into bigger things, and it is conceptually sound, and Im sure the engine may run better with cooler air. You just wont see or feel it.
#1 MOD- most everyone will agree- Get high-flow mufflers and AIR box\filter.
You can remove the two hoses that run underneath the TB and mate them together, and clamp both ends. Thats it.
Best early mods would be K&N w/open lid, and remove the screens in the MAF.
Then save up for new exhaust, heads/cam. Dont mess with gears until youve messed with the engine.
But you should drive the car at least 6-8 mos before doing anything major to it, so youll have an idea of what you want and youll be used to the car.
Luck38, There are a few easy mods you can do. I am also here in CT if you need a hand fire me off an e-mail. I can show you where everything is located.
Welcome to the Board.... Do the !TB and !Frisbee mods... Cut the Air Filter box open (cut off the metal screen) and throw in a K&N... These are all few horsepower gains at most... but it will help get every little ounce of power out, and its all the little things that make the difference...
~Cutting open the Air Lid allows more flow into the intake and the K&N flows better then stock giving a gain in horsepower.... a noticable maybe, but maybe not... takes about 10 minutes
~Bypassing the TB allows bypasses the hot coolant and keeps the TB a few degrees cooler, allowing cooler air in the engine... gains are minimal but they do help.... takes about 10 minutes
~The removing the frisbee mod is shown a constant -.1 second on the 1/4 and +1 mph trap speed.... which is about 10hp.... takes about 10minutes
That is a good start.... and a cheap one at that... Figure an hour to get everything done and wrapped up including any mental errors, bathroom breaks and food and drink breaks....
 Welcome to the board!!! Whatever you need, these guys can help! I've only been around a little while, so I'm not much of a help, but you can trust everyone else here! Again, welcome aboard, and hope to see you around, we're almost neighbors! :D
Welcome :seeya ! This is a very easy mod, only cost me $2.43. I used 1 ft of 5/8" inner diameter heater hose and a 5/8" brass hose connector. Good luck and welcome to the family!!
Hi,
This is my first post as a new member. may sound dumb, but what is a Throttle Body Bypass. I have a 1985. Of all the Mods I've done the exhaust system was the most noticeable. I'm using Power Effects. I see many use Corsica and Borla, guess it just a personal thing.
P.S.
Nice Site
Gus
welcome to you as well. I have been on this forum for about 10 months and whenever I am curious about a topic.....headers......TB Bypass.....gears.......tires....whatever it is, I try to put aside a good hour and do a "search" here on the forum in that topic. Most of your questions can be answered this way. If after my research is done and I still have questions....I'll start a new thread and ask away.
When I first got my 86 I went looking for which mods to do and after I came up with a nice short (safe and fairly cheap) list, I found that Zip-Corvettes and TPIS ( both of which are sponsors of CF) have 'basic TPI kits' that contain the exact same mods I had listed. If I remember correctly, the only difference between the ZIP and TPIS kits were a variable fuel pressure regulator (and I forget which one had it). Either way, they both had 'the basics' like the K&N filter, low resistance wires, etc, and the were packaged cheaper than the parts listed seperately.
I also bought the Hypertech performance chip, but I bought that locally at the corner auto-parts shop. I figured that with electronic components often coming with a no-return policy, I wanted somebody I could physically get my hands on if something went wrong. But if I remember correctly, one of the sites had a 'deal' where if you added the chip to the basic kit, you would get a discount.
So look at both kits and figure out if you want to go through the trouble of changing the regulator. If you really need me to, I guess I can post the links, but I don't have them right now and you can search their site for them as easy as I.
Thank you everyone  -I have replaced the air filter with a K&N, cut the lid, gutted the MAF, added Moroso wires and an Accel cap and rotor as well as an air foil. These mods have made a noticiible difference in power but i am far from where i really want to be. My exhaust was on its way out so I ordered a set of Flowmasters from my local speed shop (Jennety Racing). Unfortunately my heater core went and dropped antifreeze all over my passenger side floor so I had bypass the heater core (short fix), remove my passenger seat and carpet and clean upped the mess. The radiator place said it wouldbe around $650 to fix it and convert my old AC unit to the new one. What an expensive hobby - but i am starting to love it. Thanks again -Paul
